The Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show was started in 2001 by Washington-area resident (and serious food lover) Denise Medved. Its popularity has grown immensely since that first show, and annual events are now held in Washington, Dallas, and Houston. In addition to providing area food nuts with a full menu of gastronomical delights, the show actively supports non-profit food organizations and charities in its host communities, with a focus on culinary education, children’s health and nutrition, military families, and food banks.

"The Greatest Songs You Never Heard"

presented by

Three For A Song: Alex Hassan, Doug Bowles and Karin Paludan,

Saturday, April 28, 7:30PM

at the

Creative Cauldron Artspace, 410 S. Maple Street, Falls Church, VA

Falls Church based pianist extraordinaire Alex Hassan recreates the styles of the golden age of 1920s/30s Tin Pan Alley; sublime, acclaimed East Coast based singers Doug Bowles and Karin Paludan are versatile performers who bring the songs of the Era to life with humor and heart;  together they form Three For A Song and present "The Greatest Songs You've Never Heard".  Since the trio debuted "The Greatest Songs" in late 2011, it has received standing ovations at venues such as the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage "Jazz Club", the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress, and numerous private events.  The chemistry between the three is "infectious"  as they share breathtaking melodies from stage and film, with clever lyrics, bouncy rhythms, and hot tempos. Woven between the songs, you'll hear hilarious, heart warming and surprising anecdotes about the songs and songwriters, with listeners left to wonder how on Earth these melodies didn't become standards!  Join "Three For A Song" at the Creative Cauldron in Falls Church on Saturday, April 28th at 7:30PM, for a night of music you won't forget.  "The Greatest Songs" may become your favorite songs!  For more info about the three in Three For A Song, please visit their websites:

CHAMPAGNE & STRINGS
Bach for Solo Violin

Friday, February 10 at 7:30 pm
Lyon Park Community Center
414 N. Fillmore Street, Arlington

Our program features Joseph Scheer, concertmaster of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, performing solo violin partitas and sonatas by Bach.  These masterworks firmly established the technical capability of the violin as a solo instrument and served as a model for generations of composers including Ysaye and Bartok.  Brahms wrote of these pieces: "On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings."

Joseph Scheer was handpicked to be the concertmaster of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra by Maestro John Williams himself, and over the course of his career has performed in virtually every great concert hall and with every great conductor and soloist imaginable.  Joe will "talk and play" through these great works in our intimate concert space and IBIS "home base."

Did your New Year's resolutions include getting some culture and helping your community?  If so, on Friday, February 10 you can kill two birds with one stone.

This concert is a fundraising event for the renovation of the Lyon Park Community Center.  ALL proceeds from this concert go directly to the renovation fund.

Tickets $20

$10 seniors/students

Kids under 18 are free

(and excited about music)

IBIS reprises an audience favorite, with an assist from the Arlington Children's Chorus. This program is designed to show kids what an important role music plays in telling a good story. Joe Scheer's rollicking arrangement of the music from "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was done with Maestro John Williams' approval, and features IBIS musicians from the Kennedy Center, National Symphony and Boston Pops on strings, flute and harp, not to mention tom-tom, triangles, and police whistles! The Arlington Children's Chorus (Kevin Carr, director) helps out with the vocals. The program also features our original arrangement of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite. Mr. Carr narrates the familiar stories that Ravel set so beautifully in music, while classic illustrations are projected on the Dome Theater's ceiling.

Please forward to anyone who may be interested.

The Washington International Piano Arts Council (WIPAC) was established in 2001 to promote international friendship

Friday and Saturday, July 1 & 2 Art Sale

The art sale described below is the private collection of an old friend of mine  in his home near Dupont Circle.  That is where I bought the painting on the left by Zamy Steynovitz, which reminds me of a Chagall ...and another friend of mine bought a couple of pieces, too.

Many new pieces from other locations  (home & gallery) also will be part of this sale.

Enjoy!

Donna

See the DCdigest Food & Wine page for additional details about a new series of Italian cooking classes at Al Tiramisu, the most authentic Italian restaurant in the nation's capital.  Covering all 20 regions of Italy,  “It’s like taking a trip throughout Italy without the cost of going abroad," smiles Al Tiramisu's chef/owner Luigi Diotaiuti, who is known for his good cheer and authentic Italian cooking and wine mastery.  Attendees of the Saturday afternoon classes will gain a real "flavor" of each region—its history, culture, inhabitants, and food and wine specialties—while cooking and eating three courses with wine pairings representing the area.

The first cooking class, Saturday, April 16, 11 AM-2 PM, focuses on Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean and the southernmost region of Italy.  Succeeding classes will then move from the south up to the north of Italy. Cooking classes are $75 apiece including all food and wine. Reservations:  202-467-4466.  See the DCdigest Food & Wine page for additional details.

A CROSSOVER CONCERT

DAR WILLIAMS IN CONCERT WITH
IBIS CHAMBER MUSIC

Spectrum Theatre at the Artisphere
Arlington VA

Singer/songwriter Dar Williams

Singer/Songwriter Dar Williams

Singer/songwriter Dar Williams has long been a luminous presence in today's pop-folk music scene and a regular on the touring circuit. Stereo-type raves: "Dar Williams may be the best female singer-songwriter in America today," and Paste hails her as "one of the genre's central figures." Her deeply felt, insightful songs and sweet singing voice have a broad appeal that transcends the boundaries of gender and generation, and her unique musical style defies categorization. Now Dar is embarking on a new boundary-crossing and definition-defying musical project: a collaboration with a classical chamber music ensemble.

Founded by violinist Joseph Scheer (concertmaster of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra) and Susan Robinson (principal harp of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and Dar's sister-in-law), IBIS prizes musical excellence, innovative programming, and a friendly performance style that delights audiences.  The Washington Post has praised IBIS as "splendid" and "compelling."

This concert will feature an exciting mix of music:  original arrangements of Dar's music (popular favorites like When I Was a Boy,Beauty of the Rain, and Buzzer to name a few), as well as classical and traditional vocal music, and works by Gershwin and William Grant Still for string quartet and harp.

Divas and Bards Raising Support for Northern Virginia Artists

Alexandria, Va. – Divas and Bards will be on hand to help raise support for local artists at a special fundraising gala Saturday, Dec. 4  at the Arts Center at Convergence.

This special gala, with a theme of Divas and Bards: A Winter’s Enchantment, will begin with a 7 p.m. concert by the 7 Sopranos.  Following their lively performance, guests will be invited to “party like a diva” in the gallery featuring a new exhibit by mixed media artist Thomas Xenakis. Guests will enjoy hors d‘oeuvres, wine and champagne from 8 to 10:30 p.m.  During the reception, guests will enjoy the music of Marimba player Adam Garcia and performance art pieces by Deborah Lash. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at Convergence or reserved at 703-998-6260 or online at http://www.convergenceccf.net/site/.

Convergence’s highly successful resource center provides material support to more than 100 Northern Virginia artists. All proceeds from Divas and Bards: A Winter’s Enchantment will be used help Convergence provide an affordable artistic space and performing arts venue in Alexandria. “Until now, there has been no low-cost theater-and-concert space in Alexandria truly accessible to developing artists and companies,” says Lisa Hawkins, Convergence’s Artistic Director.  The 350-seat primary venue of Convergence has proven itself to be ideal for concerts, such as the successful Jan. 30 Swedish Musical Extravaganza – despite a blizzard, even the mayor attended.  It is also a home for 7 Sopranos, a Virginia Artist Touring Group.

Convergence’s Lab, which seats 150-200, is Alexandria’s long-awaited and much-needed experimental space for theater.  It serves as an incubator for young musicians and bands. “As the only dedicated and equipped alternative venue in Alexandria, the Lab is indispensable,” Hawkins explains.  Moreover, Convergence offers studios, gallery space, rehearsal rooms, and offices to local artists, performers, arts entrepreneur and arts organizations.  Notable resident organizations include Empowered Women International, the Songwriter’s Association of Washington and Port City Playhouse.

Convergence is a community focused on nourishing the artistic process.  Convergence, in accordance with its stated principles, provides more than simply arts spaces in a physical sense. “We provide the even rarer proper atmosphere and environment for fostering the exploration, inner development, and experimentation essential to artistic activity,” Hawkins notes.  Businesses or individuals interested in supporting this event can contact Lisa Hawkins at 703-593-7642

Convergence was founded in 2005 and offers resources of space, professional and spiritual development to local emerging artists regardless of economic, ethnic and religious background.

The National Wine Experience presented by USA TODAY (NWE) is America’s premier national wine exhibition featuring wine from over twenty five states across the country.  For the first time, you’ll be able to sample, compare and contrast wine from well-established wineries in traditional wine-growing states alongside wine from smaller, artisan producers in less-familiar wine regions. It will be a unique wine tasting and culinary experience you can’t find anywhere else.

The inaugural NWE will launch with a National Grand Tasting at the Newseum, Washington, D.C.’s newest and most interactive museum.  The event will showcase American wine from every region of the U.S., cool jazz and American regional cuisine created and inspired by internationally acclaimed chef Wolfgang Puck.  In 2011, the NWE will add a daytime Walk-Around Grand Tasting, which will feature more wineries, specialty food vendors, wine and food pairings, seminars and special privileges for the trade.

Please join us as we launch the annual ultimate celebration of American wine.

The IBIS String Quartet's First
Champagne & Strings Concert!

"IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY"

People often tell us that what they most enjoy at an IBIS concert is when we offer our insights into the music we are about to play.  This concert will begin at 7:30 with a glass of champagne (or non-alcoholic equivalent) while our violinist Joe Scheer gives a brief "fireside chat" about two great quartets by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and examines the relationship between them.
